THE TEMPER TRAP

The Temper Trap are a band that were formed out of 2005. Working their way out of the Melbourne indie circuit they were discovered and rose to acclaim at the inaugural St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival in March 2006. The Temper Trap released their debut EP that same year, and word of the group’s potential soon spread to other continents. Veteran British producer Jim Abbis (Arctic Monkeys, Adele, Kasabian) saw enough promise in The Temper Trap’s material to fly to Australia, where he gathered the musicians into Melbourne’s SingSing Studio and helped readied their debut album, Conditions for release in 2009.

‘Sweet Disposition’ a U2-inspired anthem was released that September as an indisputable hit, cracking the Top 40 in multiple countries and featuring in teen hit film 500 Days Of Summer. With 5x Platinum sales in Australia, 3x Platinum sales in the UK (1 million+ sales), and Platinum sales in the United States (1 million+ sales), the single has, to date, clocked up more than 500 million streams on Spotify alone.

Their debut album ‘Conditions’ achieved widespread success, launching into the Top 10 on the ARIA charts and Top 30 in the UK. The album is now certified Double Platinum in Australia, Gold in the UK and has sold over 750,000 units globally. It went on to win ARIA Awards for Best Group and Most Popular Australian Single for ‘Sweet Disposition’ and the APRA Award for Song Of The Year in 2010, also receiving a 2011 nomination for Best International Breakthrough Artist at the UK Brit Awards. Poised as one of Australia’s best live acts the band were now touring globally on arena support tours with Coldplay and the Rolling Stones; gracing the stages of Glastonbury, Lollapalooza and Coachella.

Two years later the band delivered its sophomore effort, the eponymously titled The Temper Trap. Produced by Tony Hoffer (Beck, Air, Goldfrapp), the album featured the singles “Need Your Love” and “Trembling Hands”. Certified platinum, the album peaked at number one in Australia and earned the band two 2012 ARIA Awards, including best Rock Album.

The end of 2013 marked the departure of one of the band’s founding members Lorenzo Sillitto and a big crossroads moment in the life of the band. Fortunately the hunger and desire to continue was as strong as ever with the band beginning work on their followup record ‘Thick As Thieves’. Whilst the core was now a four, for the first time they looked to collaborate outside of the band on songwriting, most notably with Malay (co-writer and producer on Frank Ocean’s seminal Channel Orange record), Justin Parker (best known for his work with Lana Del Rey, as well as Sia and Bat For Lashes), Ben Allen (Bombay Bicycle Club, Animal Collective, Deerhunter) and Pascal Gabriel (Ladyhawke, Goldfrapp). Released in 2016, the album received another ARIA nomination along with single ‘Fall Together’ peaking at #50 on the Australian charts.

After an extended hiatus the band celebrated ten years of Conditions in 2019 with a sold out tour across the East Coast of Australia. During this time bassist Jonny Aherne also launched his solo project ‘Shacks & Palaces’ with a slew of singles landing on US televisions series, New Amsterdam and Home efore Dark. Vocalist Dougy Mandagi also followed suit with the launching

of his solo project ‘BLOODMOON’ in 2022 with lead track ‘Disarm’ featuring as a crowd favourite on the Fifa 22 soundtrack followed by the release of his debut EP ‘Giving Up Air’.

It’s no coincidence that in 2022 The Temper Trap continues to see success off their back catalog with Sweet Disposition experiencing a viral moment on TikTok racking up over 100 thousand videos and over 200 million views, happily welcoming a new generation of fans. The moment coincides with the release of a collaboration dating back to 2012 between the band and the beloved Mac Miller on their hit track ‘Love Lost’. Released in Late July as a part of Mac’s posthumous record ‘I Love Life, Thank You’ the track debuted at #20 on the US Spotify charts and has already been streamed over 50 million times becoming an instant fan favourite.

Never wanting to rest of their laurels, The Temper Trap continue to write music in the background, with aims to head back into the studio together in 2022 to finish off a new body of work.
